Summer is for The Mistresses of Versailles

The city of Louisville was named after King Louis XVI of France for his aid during the Revolutionary War. There are French influences throughout the city, including the fleur-de-lis on much of Louisville’s branding. Since summer is the best time to be out on the town, it’s also the perfect time to read about a predecessor of the city’s namesake, with The Mistresses of Versailles trilogy.

June through early September marks the perfect time for some treats from La Patisserie Francais. Then pull up a rocking chair on our porch while you pour into the prose of Sally Christie and her intricately-researched stories of the Nesle sisters and their battle for King Louis XV’s affection. You won’t have to fight for a space with us, though. Our parlour and other common areas contain ample plush seating for all of our guests.

Fall is for Atmosphere

As the temperature drops in late September through November, it’s the perfect time to cozy up at the Inn. Choose your favorite classic tale or go for a newer historical fiction title, like 2025 hit Atmosphere from Taylor Jenkins Reid. Slip into the hot waters by booking a room with one of our soaking tubs and your page through this 1980’s NASA love story, with more twists and turns than an unbalanced bottle rocket.

Your biggest battle will be staying awake as you read in one of our plush and inviting beds. But don’t worry, if you fall asleep early we’ll be sure to serve you some reading rocket fuel in the form of fresh brewed coffee and a hearty breakfast while you’re surrounded by falling leaves and rising literary tension.

A hub for book lovers: Louisville’s bookstore scene

Part of what makes a literary retreat so satisfying is the chance to discover local bookstores, and on that Louisville delivers. From beloved independents with weekly author events to charming used-book shops where the smell of well-worn pages and story serendipity rule, your stay at the Inn at Woodhaven will put you close to the city’s best book spots.
